Anthony Gordon tipped to join Premier League rivals as chances of Newcastle exit revealed

Liverpool are the favourites to sign Anthony Gordon if he leaves Newcastle United this summer.

The Reds have previously been linked to the ex-Everton winger, who would be expected to have suitors across Europe if he decided on an exit.

The 24-year-old has scored 10 goals across all competitions this season, and has particularly stood out in the Champions League.

Gordon has netted against Barcelona, Benfica and Bayer Leverkusen, among others, with only Kylian Mbappe, Harry Kane and Erling Haaland outscoring him in the competition so far this season.

The England international signed a new long-term contract with Newcastle in 2024, although it is unclear when the deal is expected to expire.

Liverpool lead race for Anthony Gordon

Newcastle spent around £45million to sign Gordon in 2023, and the winger enjoyed a spectacular first full season at St James’ Park.

With a staggeringly good 11 goals and 10 assists in 35 Premier League matches, the forward caught the attention of several clubs.

He has not been able to reproduce form as good as that since, but the interest from the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool remains.

Newcastle will hope Gordon stays put, but Eddie Howe’s uncertain future has provided an inkling of some instability within the squad.

The Englishman is a popular figure at St James’ Park, but has found himself under pressure amid a disappointing season.

Results have improved of late, but decision-makers may well decide to go in a different direction should European football not be secured.

That could throw the futures of several players into doubt, including Gordon. One major bookmaker has named Liverpool as 5/1 favourites to sign the winger, followed by Bayern Munich (6/1) and Chelsea (8/1).

Where would Gordon fit at Liverpool?

Gordon is already disliked at Everton due to the way he forced his way out of the club, so a move to his boyhood club Liverpool would not change much in that respect.

The 24-year-old has featured up front and rarely on the right this season, but his natural position is on the left.

That position is largely covered by Cody Gakpo at Liverpool, but the Reds face an uncertain future when it comes to their wingers.

Mohamed Salah is rumoured to be leaving Anfield in the summer, while the aforementioned Netherlands international has prompted frustration this season.

Should either or both players be sold, Gordon would be expected to feature prominently in the thinking of transfer chiefs at Liverpool.
