Antonio Conte set to land transfer ‘coup’ after £150m Tottenham news – expert

Alex McLeish has suggested Antonio Conte will be handed a healthy transfer “war chest” at Tottenham after news of a £150million capital investment.

The former Scotland manager, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted increased funds would be a “coup” for the 52-year-old after the limited spending of his predecessors.

In a statement issued on Tuesday (24 May), Spurs confirmed club owners ENIC have provided a nine-figure “equity injection” to provide the “ability to further invest on and off the pitch”.

Club chairman Daniel Levy stated the development would allow “further investment in the club at an important time”.

McLeish suggested the new funds would be given to Conte to spend on new signings following the club’s fourth-place finish.

McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I saw that news. There’s a war chest, at last, I do feel that.

“I’ve alluded to Jose (Mourinho) saying he had seen some good talent in the academy. He said he would promote boys from there. It made me think that Jose’s not getting any money to spend.

“Then, of course, they make all the changes and still the manager has not invested very much in the squad, if at all.

“To hear this, let’s face it, Conte’s been pretty vocal in demanding this kind of support.

“Now he’s got them in that Champions League with the top four, this is a bit of a coup for Conte.”
