Arne Slot hit by Liverpool dressing room blow – sources

Arne Slot may not have much say over recruitment at Liverpool, making a raid on the Eredivisie unlikely after his arrival.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke explained that Liverpool have changed their backroom structure with the return of Michael Edwards and multiple new staff.

It is said that the data-driven focus behind the club’s recruitment under Edwards means Slot, 45, may not be able to bring the players he wants to Anfield.

However, he will be keen to work with players he knows well to give him a foothold in the dressing room, and conversations with the club could see him recommend options.

Arne Slot may be unable to land Eredivisie transfer targets at Liverpool

Slot’s time in the Eredivisie has allowed him to build strong connections with some of the league’s top players who have since been linked with moves to Anfield.

However, given Edwards’ return and the overhaul of the backroom staff after Jurgen Klopp’s exit, with two more staff members set to arrive in June, the transfer process may not be in the manager’s hands.

Edwards is credited with leading the moves for the likes of Mohamed Salah, Alisson and Virgil Van Dijk, with a return to similar deals now expected after his return.

The data-based recruitment system has secured some of the club’s top deals, so while the manager may be able to lend advice, the recruitment team will focus on getting the right moves over the line.

Football Insider reported on 20 May that Liverpool are already working on their first summer signing, with a “huge” deal to sign a new centre-back being led by Edwards.
