Arsenal backed to sign holding midfielder after Mikel Arteta reveal – pundit

Frank McAvennie has claimed Arsenal need to sign a holding midfielder before the end of the transfer window.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-West Ham striker suggested the Gunners need cover in the midfield and full-back areas.

As quoted by The Sun (30 July), Mikel Arteta is hopeful that the London club can do more business before the close of the transfer window.

Arteta added that there needs to be a “good connection” between the players.

The Gunners have made five additions to their squad so far this summer.

When asked what positions he thought the Gunners still need to strengthen in before the window shuts, McAvennie told Football Insider‘s Charlotte Cohen: “I think they’ve brought decent players in.

I think [Gabriel] Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko, that’s two good players. I’m not really too convinced about who they’ve got holding in midfield. [Thomas] Partey hasn’t hit the ground running.

In terms of full-backs, he might be talking about getting cover for [Kieran] Tierney.

The club have confirmed the signings of Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko on from Man City.

Both players put pen to paper on long-term deals at the Emirates.

They joined Fabio Vieira, Matt Turner and Marquinhos as new recruits at the Emirates.

A number of players have left the Emirates during this window, most notably Alexandre Lacazette and Nuno Tavares.
