Arsenal backed to sign Joao Cancelo after source’s bust-up reveal – pundit
Arsenal have been backed to sign Joao Cancelo after his fall out with Pep Guardiola.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton believes that Joao Cancelo would fit perfectly into Mikel Arteta’s system.
Football Insider revealed on Saturday (10 June) that the 29-year-old has been told his time at the Etihad Stadium is over following a high-profile bust-up with Pep Guardiola.
Cancelo, who is under contract at Man City until June 2027, has won three league titles, two League Cups and a Champions League since joining the club in 2019.
Arsenal have cooled their interest in Real Valladolid defender Ivan Fresneda as they are targeting Cancelo, as revealed by Football Insider (14 June).
With a potential deal on the cards, Hutton claims that Cancelo would work well under Arteta.
“Of course Cancelo would be a great fit at Arsenal,” He told Football Insider.
“When Cancelo was playing with Man City he was the first full-back to come into midfield and play inside, which is also how Arteta plays.”
“Look at Oleksandr Zinchenko, that is the sort of role he operates in, and is a reason he plays ahead of Kieran Tierney, as he can’t adapt to playing that way.”
“But if Arsenal can sign a player like Cancelo, it will definitely make them better.

“Cancelo is versatile as he can play on the left side or on the right side, which is not an issue for the Gunners, and it will make them stronger going into the next season.”
“Pep Guardiola is not worried about selling his players to rivals, and I think the situation with Cancelo will be the same.”
