Mustafi makes bold claim about current Arsenal team

Shkodran Mustafi has said that he still believes that Arsenal can win the Premier League title this season.

Talking to Sky Sports, the defender has said that his team won’t stop trying despite being 12 points behind leaders Chelsea.

It’s a bold claim given the deficit between the two London teams and the fact that they were comprehensively dismantled 3-1 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Arsenal face a home tie against relegation-threatened Hull in their next fixture and Mustafi is ready to help the club change its ways after back-to-back defeats to Watford and Chelsea.

“I think it’s going to be more difficult than it was before but I’m a believer,” he said to Sky Sports. “I don’t give up.

“As long as it’s possible we’re going to fight for it, and in the end we will see and if we’re lucky enough and good enough to go for it or not.

“We knew it would be difficult at Stamford Bridge, but we knew as well it’s possible to win. I think in the end we didn’t do enough.”

Despite Mustafi’s relentless ambition to win the Premier League title, Arsenal’s run of top four finishes may be under threat this season as Champions League places appear to be as tightly contested as ever.

Five points separate Tottenham in second and Manchester United in sixth, so there is no guarantee that Arsene Wenger will take his team to Europe’s most prestigious competition next season, let alone claim that elusive title.

The Gunners are currently in fourth place with 47 points, two points behind Man City, three points behind rivals Tottenham and 12 points behind Chelsea.

After Saturday’s clash with Hull, Arsenal have a tough run of fixtures.

They face Bayern Munich on Wednesday night before a highly-anticipated tie against Vanarama National League side Sutton Untied in the FA Cup.

An away trip to Liverpool in the league follows before the second leg of their Champions League tie with Bayern.
