Arsenal could axe Emile Smith Rowe after decision ‘backfires’ before Southampton clash – expert

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta could axe Emile Smith Rowe for the trip to Southampton, according to Kevin Campbell.

The former Gunners and Everton striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested Rob Holding would replace the 21-year-old as part of a defensive shake-up.

Arsenal’s top four hopes were dented by a 2-1 loss to Brighton last Saturday.

Arteta’s team selection against the Seagulls has been widely criticised, with Granit Xhaka preferred at left-back in the absence of Kieran Tierney.

As quoted by Football.London (9 April), Arteta justified his decision and suggested hindsight is a wonderful thing.

When asked about potential changes for the trip to Southampton, Campbell told Football Insider: “[Bukayo] Saka has to stay out wide.

“It would weaken us going forward if he drops back.

Arteta could put Cedric [Soares] at left-back. He is more than capable of playing there. He is a talented full-back.

“I would then put Ben White at right-back and bring Rob Holding in at centre-half. That way Xhaka can go back into midfield alongside Sambi [Lokonga] which is so important. Smith Rowe could be the one who makes way.

“We had no base against Brighton. They bossed the game. You need your best players in their best positions. It could backfire again if Arteta doesn’t recognise that.”

Arsenal

The Gunners are fifth in the Premier League and three points behind Tottenham with a game in hand.

Tottenham’s goal difference is also 10 better than Arsenal’s.

In other news, an expert has claimed Arsenal could sign a ‘better’ and ‘cheaper’ alternative to Dominic Calvert-Lewin after source’s update.
