Expert: Arsenal exit ‘on the cards’ for Reiss Nelson amid behind-the-scenes reveal

The injured Reiss Nelson could soon be sent out on loan again by Arsenal.

That is the view of medical expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in injury and data analysis.

Nelson, 22, spent the second half of 2021-22 on loan with Dutch side Feyenoord, who reached the final of the Europa Conference League with him in the side.

He was named on the bench by Mikel Arteta for the 2-0 win over Crystal Palace on the opening day of 2022-23 but has since suffered a quadriceps injury in training.

As quoted by The Mirror last Thursday (18 August), the manager revealed that scans had returned “bad news” for the Hale End academy graduate.

But Dinnery suggests that Nelson, who he forecasts will be out of action until October, could be set to leave the club on loan in any case.

“We are talking about an injury that was a training ground problem,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“But my understanding is that it could be after the international break before we see him back in contention.

“He’s not a player we expect to push on and threaten a start unless there are a few injuries in that Arsenal squad.

“He may be a player that Mikel Arteta could utilise as part of their European campaign when he rests and rotates the squad. Or, there could potentially be another loan move on the cards.

“But we are at least another month away from a return, which would indicate a grade two tear.

“With the international break coming around mid-September, it could be that the sensible decision is to hold him back until around about October and then he can kick on from there.”
