Arsenal face ‘huge’ deal-breaker in Bukayo Saka contract talks after journalist update – pundit
Noel Whelan has suggested Bukayo Saka will only sign a new contract if Arsenal reach the Champions League this season.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted playing among Europe’s elite is “huge” for a player of Saka’s talent and potential.
As reported by reputed journalist Fabrizio Romano today (28 March), Arsenal are preparing an opening proposal to tie the 20-year-old to new terms.
Discussions will reportedly take place in the summer, with Saka’s current deal set to expire in 2024.
Whelan admitted there is no way the winger should sign anything until the summer.
He suggested Arsenal not getting Champions League football could be a deal-breaker.
Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Is it worth it for two months of the season? Right now, if I was Saka, I’d be holding out on the contract I’ve already got.
“I’d be seeing if we are in the Champions League and then having discussions with the manager.
“Champions League football, for me, is huge, especially when someone’s playing at the top of the game. Someone that’s so important, someone so young.
“For me, playing the way he’s playing, I wouldn’t be thinking about another contract just yet. I’d be thinking of doing my very best for Arsenal.
“If we get in the Champions League, that’s where I want to play, then contract negotiations can start.”

Saka has played 121 times for Arsenal since breaking through the youth ranks in north London.
He has 33 appearances this season, with 10 goals and five assists under his belt.
