Arsenal fans react on Twitter to Elneny display in AFCON final
By Amir Mir
Mohamed Elneny scored a beautiful goal for Egypt as they were beaten 2-1 by Cameroon in the Africa Cup of Nations final on Sunday – and fans on Twitter lauded their player.
The 24-year-old opened the scoring after wonderfully executing his shot past the opposition goalkeeper from a tight angle after 22 minutes.
But, Cameroon fought back after the break, firstly through a powerful header from Nicolas Nkoulou just before the hour mark before substitute Vincent Aboubakar netted the winner two minutes before time.
Arsenal supporters sent their commiserations to their player as his home country were beaten in a major final.
However, others did applaud the midfielder for a well-taken goal as they hailed the great finish from the Egyptian.
But another stated that the Gunners supporters should not be celebrating his goal because it was not scored for them.
Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:
Since his absence, Arsene Wenger’s side have lost a number of important matches, including being beaten 2-1 against Watford and 3-1 at Premier League leaders Chelsea at the weekend.
He will now return to club action where the Gunners will be looking to put recent defeats behind them when they take on relegation-threatened Hull next Saturday.
That will be followed by a trip to Germany where they take on Bayern Munich in the round of 16 stage of the Champions League.
