Arsenal fans react on Twitter to Gabriel display v West Ham
By Harvey Byrne
Gabriel started at right-back in Arsenal’s 5-1 victory over West Ham on Saturday – and fans on Twitter were delighted with the defender’s display in an unnatural position.
Usual full-back Hector Bellerin and back-up Mathieu Debuchy are currently out injured, while Arsene Wenger stated that Carl Jenkinson was “low on confidence.”
This left usual centre-back Gabriel to cover the position and he performed admirably, as goals from Mesut Ozil, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and an Alexis Sanchez hat-trick secured the Gunners the win.
The performance of the Brazilian defender caught much of the fans attention on social media alongside Sanchez and Oxlade-Chamberlain.
Here are a selection of their messages on Twitter:
Gabriel, 26, was first put into the right-back position against Bournemouth last Sunday, which saw his side pick up a 3-1 victory.
He has featured in three other EFL Cup fixtures at centre-back this campaign, but the partnership between Laurent Koscielny and Shkodran Mustafi in the centre means he may have to settle for the wide role.
Arsenal’s victory has seen them move up to second place in the league table and they sit three points behind London rivals Chelsea at the top of the league.
They will travel to Basel in the Champions League on Tuesday, before hosting Stoke at the Emirates on Saturday in the league.
