Arsenal have ‘special’ plan for Saliba as ‘phenomenal’ footage emerges – Campbell

Arsenal could switch to a back three next season to accommodate the “phenomenal” William Saliba.

That is the view of former Gunners striker Kevin Campbell, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the 20-year-old’s “very exciting” progression at Marseille.

Saliba joined the Ligue 1 side on a season-long loan deal in July.

As club footage shows, the centre-half starred in Sunday’s goalless draw with Paris Saint-Germain.

His accomplished performance included a stunning last ditch tackle to deny Kylian Mbappe a clear goalscoring opportunity.

Across all competitions this season, Saliba has made 12 appearances.

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on Saliba’s display against PSG and prospects at the Emirates, Campbell said: “It was very exciting.

“The fact of the matter is, it was a really smart decision to send him to Marseille on loan. Mikel Arteta has said that he has a big future at Arsenal. He wants him to be ready though. You can see that he is getting ready.

“His performances have been phenomenal. I cannot wait to see him come back, I really can’t.

“He used to be a midfielder, so he’s very good on the ball. He is also quick and imposing.

“I’m looking at it and I’m thinking Mikel Arteta will go with a back three next season. Ben White, Gabriel [Magalhaes] and Saliba in a back three. That would be something special at the back.”
