Medical expert: Arsenal in ‘amazing place’ after Takehiro Tomiyasu update

Mikel Arteta is in an “amazing place” at Arsenal at present – and so there is no need to rush Takehiro Tomiyasu back from injury.

That is the view of injury expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in medicine and data analysis.

Tomiyasu, 23, has not played since the League Cup semi-final defeat to Liverpool on 20 January, which was only his second appearance in 2022.

The Japanese right-back suffered another calf injury on the opposite leg after returning to training from an initial calf setback in late February.

As quoted by the Evening Standard last Friday (11 March), Arteta revealed that his return to action would be handled in the “safest possible way.”

And Dinnery claims that the Gunners’ red-hot form means the Spanish manager will be in no rush to bring Tomiyasu back in.

“He’s got to come through team training without any reaction, knocks or niggles,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“Arteta is in an amazing place at the moment. They are coming off the back of five straight wins and they’ve won nine out of their last 11.

“Cedric Soares isn’t everyone’s first choice but he is able to do a job in there.

“While they are winning, the pressure eases on Arteta to bring Tomiyasu back. That’s a brilliant luxury to have.

“Once he is able to train normally, he may play one or two bounce games. After that, they can introduce back into the matchday squad.”

Tomiyasu signed for Arsenal in a £19.8million deal from Bologna in August last year.
