Finance guru: Arsenal could be ‘in trouble’ after new ‘scandal’ update

Arsenal will be “collateral damage” if one of their stars is found guilty of breaking betting regulations by the FA.

So says finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the allegations surrounding an unnamed Gunners player.

The FA are analysing suspicious betting patterns over a booking received by the player earlier this term, per The Athletic last Wednesday (19 January).

The same outlet reported last Saturday (22 January) that a bookmaker has flagged £310,000 worth of bets to the international betting watchdog.

The FA are gathering evidence at this stage but a formal investigation is not yet underway.

But Plumley claims that Arsenal could be considered guilty by association in the court of public opinion.

“You can’t give any direct blame to the club,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“But the collateral damage is that if a player is with that club, by proxy, the club will be in trouble from a reputational point of view.

“A betting scandal never looks good from when we have seen them throughout history.

“One player never represents a whole club but the other damage is that they will tarnish them purely through association.

“Let’s see where it goes, but it is not a good look all round in general.”

Arsenal are next in action against Wolves in the Premier League after the winter break on 10 February.
