Arsenal news: Campbell issues ‘big’ Aaron Ramsdale claim after injury news confirmed

Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale will be “gutted” to miss out on the chance to impress England boss Gareth Southgate because of injury, according to Kevin Campbell.

The former Gunners and Everton striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suspects it is “a big blow” to the 23-year-old and his aspirations of becoming England’s number one before the World Cup.

Ramsdale was absent from the Arsenal team that beat Aston Villa 1-0 on Saturday due to a muscle injury picked up against Liverpool.

Speaking to club media post-match (19 March), Mikel Arteta confirmed the ex-Sheffield United keeper would be sidelined over the international break.

The Three Lions are set to face Switzerland and Cote d’Ivoire in friendlies at Wembley.

Speaking to Sky Sports (13 March), Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers labelled Ramsdale as the best English goalkeeper.

When asked if Ramsdale’s injury would hurt his chances of surpassing Jordan Pickford, Campbell told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs:

“It’s a big blow for Ramsdale who has proved that he is one of the top goalkeepers in the league this season.

“This international break was a chance for him to get seen by Southgate so it’s a shame. I’m sure he’s gutted but these things happen for a reason though.

“He needs to rest, recuperate and make sure he’s fit and ready for Arsenal.”

Ramsdale has been one of Arsenal’s standout performers this season.

He has kept 14 clean sheets in 27 appearances across all competitions.
