Arsenal news: Expert issues ‘massive’ claim after £107m news

Champions League qualification would be “a massive boost” for Arsenal after a difficult financial year, according to Kevin Campbell.

The former Gunners striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested even Europa League qualification would be a success for Mikel Arteta’s side this season.

In their annual accounts (28 February), Arsenal posted a loss of £107.3 million after tax for the year ending 31 May 2021.

The club explained how the results have been “materially impacted” by the Covid pandemic in which fans were almost entirely absent from stadiums.

Fans have returned to the Emirates this season as the Gunners push to finish in the top four.

When asked if Champions League qualification has increased importance after the financial results, Campbell told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs:

“The plan had to be to do as well as your can the season after Covid. Not having fans in the stadium, everyone has taken a loss and clubs like Arsenal feel it more because they have a bigger stadium.

“How quick can you mitigate that loss? That’s the question. If Arsenal can move into the Champions League spots, or even the Europa League spots, you are on the road to recovery.

“It would be a massive boost for the football club if we can qualify for the Champions League. The Champions League would be the cherry on top of what has been a promising season.

“The Europa would even be a step up from last season.”
