Medical expert shreds abysmal Reiss Nelson diet after Arsenal confession

Arsenal star Reiss Nelson’s poor diet and sleeping habits held him back during his early career – but he can reach new heights now he has addressed his lifestyle choices.

That is the view of injury expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in medicine and data analysis.

Nelson, 22, spent the 2021-22 campaign on loan at Dutch side Feyenoord.

The winger made just a handful of experiences for the Gunners in 2020-21 but fared far better in Holland, helping Feyenoord reach the final of the Europa Conference League and finish third in the Eredivisie.

The youngster told The Athletic last Wednesday (25 May) that his upturn has coincided with the increased emphasis the youngster now places on sleep and nutrition.

Nelson confessed that previously he had “stayed up too late” and “didn’t care about what [he] was eating.”

Dinnery insists that it is little wonder that Nelson’s career at the Emirates did not take off while he was not taking care of himself.

“If you’re wanting to maximise performance at the highest level, you have to make sure you’re looking after yourself off the pitch,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“That 90-minute slot is just one very small part of your working week. In terms of nutrition, you need to make sure you’re getting the right carbs, proteins, fats. That is going to encourage and help muscle growth and repair.

“It’s also crucial for energy. All of these macronutrients combine. That means that once you cross that white line, you’re able to give it your all.

“Even the timing of meals is important. That links with sleep. You need to get the right amount at the right time.

“If you’re not, then there is this domino effect when you’re trying to do something that is pushing the boundaries of your body. And historically, we have seen Reiss Nelson have some injury issues.

“A lack of sleep has an impact on mental and physical state, but also just on learning, adapting and memory. That is every single facet of footballing life.

“If you can’t nail that down, you can’t expect to go out and perform at your best level.”
