Arsenal tipped to repeat Gabriel Martinelli trick as new signing bagged – pundit
Noel Whelan has suggested there is no “better place” to bring young talent through than Arsenal as Brazillian youngster Marquinhos prepares to sign.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed a move for the 19-year-old could prove to be a “real coup” if he can emulate Gabriel Martinelli’s success in north London.
According to journalist Fabrizio Romano (16 May), Arsenal have reached a “full agreement” with giants Sao Paulo to sign winger Marquinhos for €3.5million (£3million).
It is claimed that the left-footed winger will sign a contract until 2027.
The youngster, who primarily plays on the right, has netted four goals in 40 appearances for Sao Paulo.
Whelan suggested Arsenal “can’t really go wrong” by signing the starlet for such a low fee.
“It could be a real coup if he can follow in the footsteps of Martinelli,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.
“It’s not just about getting players in for the here and now. They’re looking to the future, and for £3.5million you can’t really go wrong.
“What better place to bring these young talents through? They’ve got a brilliant system at Arsenal – youngsters have always thrived there.
“They’re tapping into the Brazillian market again. Hopefully, we can see him in the first time in the years to come alongside Martinelli.”
Martinelli joined Arsenal for a reported £6.5milllion from Brazillian club Ituano in 2019.
The two-cap international star has gone on to notch 17 goals in 83 games for the Gunners.
