Arsenal tipped to sign ‘huge’ Alexandre Lacazette upgrade after £60m latest – pundit

A move for Dominic Calvert-Lewin would “make sense” for Arsenal this summer, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 25-year-old would provide a “focal point” the Gunners are currently missing.

According to The Sun (26 March), Everton will sell Calvert-Lewin during the summer transfer window – with West Ham and Arsenal on “red alert”.

The report claims the Hammers launched a January inquiry but baulked at the Toffees’ £60million valuation.

Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah are the only two senior striking options on the books at Arsenal – and both are set to leave the club in June when their contracts expire.

Whelan suggested Calvert-Lewin could be the “out-and-out nine” Mikel Arteta’s side are in need of.

“Arsenal would make sense for him as a destination, absolutely,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“That’s the one thing they’re probably missing at the moment. That finisher and that real focal point. It could be huge for them.

“Alexandre Lacazette has been excellent and really committed – but he’s not an out-and-out nine.

“Look at all the young, English talent that Arteta is nurturing and bringing through right now. Adding Calvert-Lewin to that really makes sense to me.”

Lacazette has managed just six goals in all competitions this term but has added an impressive eight assists.

Arsenal

Arsenal sit fourth in the Premier League and are in the driver’s seat to secure a return to the Champions League.

Calvert-Lewin, who is contracted until 2025, has netted just three goals in 10 top-flight outings this term.
