Arsenal to ‘definitely’ sign defender after Gabriel injury latest – Insider

Arsenal are working on a move to sign a new centre-back in the January transfer window following Gabriel’s injury blow against Liverpool.

This is according to former Man United, Tottenham and West Ham scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game as he exclusively told Football Insider that the Gunners have already drawn up a shortlist of options.

Gabriel, 26, limped off in the 54th minute with what appeared to be a knee ligament injury during the 2-2 draw with Liverpool at the Emirates.

Following the game, Mikel Arteta claimed he was unsure about the extent of the injury, but said the defender “could not run”.

The centre-back had previously played every minute of Premier League football this season, with the potentially serious blow setting off alarm bells at Arsenal.

Brown previously told Football Insider that the Gunners would look to improve their squad depth amid growing concerns at the Emirates.

Now, he has repeated those sentiments as he insisted the club would be looking to strengthen the depth across their team with their injury crisis worsening.

Arsenal outline new transfer plan after Gabriel injury

Arsenal ended the game against Liverpool with a back four of Thomas Partey, Ben White, Jakub Kiwior and Myles Lewis-Skelly, once again exposing their lack of depth.

Brown, who spent over a decade at Man United during their most successful period and has a wealth of experience in building a winning team, insisted that the Gunners must now land a deal to add to their defensive depth in the transfer window.

They’re definitely going to enter the transfer market,” he told Football Insider.

“After Gabriel’s injury, the transfer team will be working overtime.

“They’ve already been looking at options to help the depth in that position.

“Saliba and Gabriel are so important to their team in that defensive unit and you need to know the level won’t drop if either of them are out.

“The defence is the reason Arsenal have become such a force.

Finding new options for those positions is an issue that will be swamping them at the moment.

“The back four that ended the game against Liverpool is never going to be good enough to challenge for the title, so they’ll definitely be looking to improve that depth.”
