Arsenal transfer news: Edu ‘wide open to criticism’ after midfielder and striker latest – Campbell

Kevin Campbell has claimed “questions need to be asked” of Arsenal technical director Edu after no striker or midfielder arrived in the January window.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gunners and Everton striker said there is “gaping holes” in Mikel Arteta’s squad going into the second half of the season.

Arsenal made just one signing last month – Auston Trusty arriving from Colorado Rapids in a permanent deal.

A centre-midfielder and a striker were targeted in the window but moves failed to materialise.

The Gunners missed out on top target Dusan Vlahovic, who joined Juventus in a £66million deal from Fiorentina.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of Arsenal’s business, Campbell said: “Questions need to be asked of Edu, 100 per cent.

“Arsenal had holes before all of the players left and went out on loan. Now there is gaping holes. Those holes needed filling.

“To not fill any, Edu has left himself wide open to criticism. It is part and parcel of the course.

“To not get in a striker or a centre-midfielder people are going to ask questions and rightly so. The fans are disappointed because we look short in those two positions now.”

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Callum Chambers and Sead Kolasinac left the club permanently prior to Monday’s 11pm deadline.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Folarin Balogun, Pablo Mari and new signing Auston Trusty left the Emirates on loan.

In other news, Kieran Maguire has claimed Mikel Arteta and Stan Kroenke could be ‘building something special’ after Arsenal images emerge.
