Arsenal transfer news: Expert issues ‘big’ Ollie Watkins claim after source’s ‘huge’ reveal
Frank McAvennie insists Aston Villa star Ollie Watkins is not good enough to play for Arsenal.
The former Villa hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claims the striker would struggle as a lone forward at the Emirates.
This site revealed on 3 March that Arsenal have been handed a “huge” boost in their bid to lure Watkins this summer.
A recruitment source told Football Insider that Aston Villa will listen to offers for Watkins as manager Steven Gerrard is not convinced he is the A-list striker he needs.
The five-time England international has netted seven goals in 22 league appearances this term.
However, McAvennie claims Arsenal should look to sign a better striker in the summer.
“Watkins to Arsenal? I’m not sure,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“I don’t think he’s an out and out centre forward and that’s what Arsenal need.
“I don’t think he can play up front on his own. Maybe he could if there were a lot of good players around him.
“Arsenal have been so hot and cold this season. you never know what you are going to get with them.
“Would he shine as a big player in that team? I’m not convinced. I like him a lot, I just don’t see him at Arsenal.
“Plenty of clubs will be interested in him if Villa do want to let him go.
“So let’s see what happens, I just think Arsenal might be a level too high for him.”

Watkins joined Aston Villa in the summer of 2020.
He has scored 23 goals in 64 total games for the club.
