Arsenal’s Anthony Gordon stance revealed after Newcastle exit news

Arsenal are currently unlikely to follow up on their initial interest in Anthony Gordon despite suggestions he could be allowed to leave Newcastle.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that clubs including Arsenal and Liverpool will be made aware of the 24-year-old’s situation.

However, Mikel Arteta is believed to be happy with his current wide options in Gabriel Martinelli, Bukayo Saka and Noni Madueke, with Gordon deemed an expensive risk.

While his pace and directness could make him a valuable asset, the England international’s lack of end product so far this season has raised red flags.

Gordon has now gone over a year without an open play goal in the Premier League, and Brown warned Football Insider that Gordon’s form is a problem for Eddie Howe.

Arsenal cool interest in Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon

Brown told Football Insider on 19 January that Newcastle are prepared to let Gordon leave at the end of the season if they receive a “big” offer.

Liverpool and Arsenal are both long-term admirers of his, but are now believed to be having second thoughts about making a move to sign him.

Gordon has been linked to Arsenal in the past,” Brown told Football Insider.

But if he continues like this the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal for example won’t be interested.

“He shares some qualities with Madueke, he’s very direct, wants to get into attacking areas and to get at people, but if you offered me both I would take Madueke.

“For Arsenal, it seems Arteta is happy with the options he’s got out wide at the moment.

“Madueke, Saka and Martinelli are three very good options, and then you’ve got the likes of Trossard to come in there too, so it’s not a priority.

“They would be taking a risk signing Gordon, because he’s not showing at the moment that he should be playing at the very highest level.

“Plus, it would be an expensive deal for the risk you’d be taking. They’ll weigh up the pros and cons but ultimately I think it’s unlikely.”

Mikel Arteta plans to block January exits

Brown told Football Insider on 13 January that Arsenal have no plans to lose Ben White amid reported interest from David Moyes’ Everton.

The 28-year-old has started just nine games in what has been a season marred by injuries, but remains a key part of the squad and Arteta’s plans for the season.

This comes after Brown told Football Insider that Arteta would block Ethan Nwaneri’s exit despite suggestions he could leave on loan this month.

Arsenal beat Porstmouth 4-1 to progress into the FA Cup fourth round, while they are also in the Carabao Cup semi-finals and Champions League knockout stages.

That, alongside competing at the top of the Premier League in hopes of finally securing the title, means the boss will block any big-name exits in January.
