Arsenal’s Wembley record analysed as exciting Emirates Stadium expansion planned

Arsenal are set for a period at Wembley Stadium after plans were revealed to expand Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners have been in their home at Emirates Stadium for 19 years since leaving Highbury in 2006.

West Ham’s move to the London Stadium, and the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, though both boast bigger capacities than Arsenal.

Arsenal’s 2-0 win over West Ham leaves them top of the Premier League table, and the Gunners are now looking to close the capacity gap off the pitch.

Arsenal to follow Spurs’ lead

As per The Telegraph, [7 October], Arsenal want to expand the capacity of Emirates Stadium to over 70,000.

However, that would mean Mikel Arteta’s side having to move to Wembley Stadium to facilitate the building plans.

Spurs moved to Wembley and played all their games at England‘s home during the 2017-18 season, coming third and winning 13 of their 19 matches.

Arsenal’s Wembley record

Arsenal have a long history of playing at Wembley, with the club famously having won the most FA Cup titles.

Arteta has won on both of his visits to Wembley with Arsenal, with the Gunners beating Chelsea in the FA 2020-21 FA Cup final and Man City in the 2023 Community Shield final on penalties.

Arsenal’s record at Wembley Stadium.

Since a shock defeat to Birmingham City in the League Cup final in 2011, Arsenal’s only defeat in 15 trips has come against Pep Guardiola’s Man City.

Arsenal have previously played Champions League football at the national stadium in 1998/99, winning twice and losing one.

Overall, Arsenal love a trip to Wembley Stadium and the short 11 mile switch across North London for a short period of time should not severely hinder the clubs hopes of winning major trophies.
