Aston Villa clear the way for Tammy Abraham as star jets out for ‘imminent’ loan to buy transfer

Aston Villa are taking firm steps towards securing the signing of Tammy Abraham.

Unai Emery has identified the Roma striker as the ideal man to bolster the attacking ranks at Villa Park, but the background to the deal is complex.

Football Insider revealed on Tuesday that Roma plan to accept a permanent offer for Abraham if it does arrive, but Aston Villa must also strike an agreement with Besiktas, who currently have an obligation to buy the striker at the end of the season.

The 28-year-old has been away from the Premier League for over four years, but his return could now potentially be sealed in a matter of weeks as the Villans continue to work towards a deal.

Aston Villa trimming attacking options to make way for Abraham

Former Aston Villa chief executive Keith Wyness told Football Insider last week that he doesn’t expect Villa to be very active in the transfer market, given their financial constraints.

The ex-Villa Park chief suggested that his former club’s precarious PSR standing is likely to see them in a position where they need to move players out of the door in order to buy.

That could potentially have cast doubt on the move for Abraham, but the second city outfit now appear to be clearing the way for him to join the squad.

Aston Villa have already offered Evann Guessand to Besiktas as part of a potential deal for Abraham, and Donyell Malen’s move to Roma is now “imminent,” according to journalist Ekrem Konur.

The Dutchman’s exit means that Guessand and Ollie Watkins are the only remaining options to lead the line for Emery, and with the former potentially to be used as part of a move for Abraham, Villa surely feel that there is a strong chance of securing his signature.

This is when Donyell Malen will officially leave

Malen has struggled to find consistency at Aston Villa since his arrival from Borussia Dortmund in January 2025, and he has often failed to take the chances that have been provided to him by Emery.

The 26-year-old has started just five Premier League games so far this term, and has never been able to truly establish himself a regular fixture of the team since his move to England.

With that in mind, Villa will surely be glad to see him go, and they won’t have to wait much longer, with Fabrizio Romano now suggesting that he is set to jet out to the Italian capital on Wednesday in order to finalise the deal.

The fact that the Premier League outfit have been able to secure a mandatory £25million fee as part of the agreement is a triumph, considering that they only shelled out around £20m to bring him in.

Exits were always likely to be needed in order for Villa to add to their squad this winter, and they have now firmly set the ball rolling for Abraham to come through the door.
