Aston Villa close in on Jaden Philogene after ‘huge’ offer – sources

Aston Villa are now in pole position to sign Jaden Philogene from Hull City, sources have told Football Insider.

Villa have hijacked Ipswich Town and Everton’s deal and have offered a huge contract to re-sign their academy product.

Newly promoted Ipswich had their £18million offer accepted, with Everton also agreeing a deal for him.

But in the latest twist in this transfer saga, Villa have now moved to bring him back to Villa Park after less than three years away from the club.

Unai Emery’s side have triggered their matching rights option to equal their Premier League rivals’ offer for the young winger.

Villa originally sold the 22-year-old to Hull City last September but retained a buy-back option under certain conditions, which they are now exercising.

According to sources, Villa inserted a clause that meant they would have three days to match any bid once a deal had been agreed upon for Philogene.

Philogene now looks set to the club where he kickstarted his career, having been signed to Villa’s academy in 2018.

The winger impressed as part of the Under 23s squad, where he scored 13 goals in 27 appearances.

Philogene had made six appearances for Villa’s first-team squad during his initial spell with the club, providing two assists during those games.

Football Insider previously revealed that Philogene had preferred Ipswich’s proposal over what Everton offered, but he now has to consider Villa.

Emery can offer Champions League football to the 22-year-old following their fourth-placed finish last season, which could lure him.

In other news, Villa are in talks with Tottenham over a swap deal.
