Aston Villa could be close to ‘massive’ deal after source’s Matty Cash update – expert

It would be “massive” if Aston Villa could tie Matty Cash down to a new long-term deal.

That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider amid an update on the defender’s future.

As revealed by Football Insider on Monday (21 March), Villa are preparing a big-money contract offer to tie Cash down amid interest from Atletico Madrid.

A Spanish source has told this site the La Liga heavyweights have been keeping close tabs on the 24-year-old right-back.

They have been making regular checks on the defender ahead of the summer.

“Any interest will turn a player’s head, that’s a given,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“This is different though, this is about going to a club where you will play Champions League football every season.

“I can’t see Aston Villa getting into that position yet. They are a club on the up but they aren’t there yet.

“Cash is an excellent player and it’s no surprise to me that there is interest in him.

“If Villa can get him tied down to a new deal then that would be massive for them.

“It would ward off those teams who do what to sign him so if the player is open to signing a new deal I would get that done and announced as soon as possible.”

Cash has made 31 appearances in all competitions for Villa this season.
