Aston Villa could complete ‘incredible’ Bentancur signing after bid update – pundit

Paul Robinson is stunned by the possibility of Aston Villa signing Juventus midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur this month.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England goalkeeper said “it’s incredible” to think Bentancur, Lucas Digne and Philippe Coutinho could all arrive in a January window.

Steven Gerrard’s side want to sign a centre-midfielder before the transfer window shuts next Monday having lost Marvelous Nakamba to a serious knee injury last month.

A Villa source told Football Insider (25 January) that the club have submitted an offer of around £18million for the centre-midfielder, 24.

It is believed that the 45-times Uruguay international is very keen to move to Villa Park this month.

Bentancur‘s contract in Turin runs until the summer of 2024.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his thoughts on the potential signing, Robinson said: “Villa are going from strength to strength.

“Steven clearly went there for a reason and that’s because the board were going to back him and backed him they have.

“How many times have you see Villa sign a player from Juventus? It just tells you where they are at right.

“To sign Bentancur, Digne and Coutinho in a January window is impressive for any club. It is incredible for a club that was in the Championship just a few years ago.”

Bentancur has made 26 appearances across all competitions this season.

He’s played 181 times in total for Juventus.
