Aston Villa could sell stars to fund Morgan Rogers deal – Keith Wyness
Aston Villa’s former chief Keith Wyness has suggested the club may have to “divest” some of their playing staff in order to afford a bumper deal for Morgan Rogers.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Villa Park between 2016 and 2018 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested Monchi and his team “will have a plan” to keep Villa on the right side of Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
Football Insider revealed on 7 November that Aston Villa are set to hand attacker Rogers, 22 a “huge” pay rise in his new contract.
He only joined Villa in February 2024 on a relatively modest contract after leaving Championship side Middlesbrough, but is now set for an uplift after his stellar form so far this season.
Jhon Duran has also signed a lucrative new deal in recent months after starring for Unai Emery’s side in the early months of the new campaign.
Aston Villa will still have PSR ‘concerns’, says Wyness
Wyness backed Villa to “work it out” financially, but hinted player sales could be on the horizon.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “This is a classic football dilemma.
“You’ve got the young talent coming through, like Duran and Rogers – and you don’t want to lose them.
“But at the same time, you’ve got the PSR situation to look at.
“Rogers deserves a new deal, he’s obviously an up-and-coming talent.
“He’s shown himself to be a very good performer.
“But the PSR issue is there for Villa. Monchi and his colleagues will understand that, and will have a plan.
“He’s the consummate operator.

“They’ll know where they are going to divest, they know where they have excess players.
“Villa will work it out, but it’s definitely something they will have to be concerned about.”
