Aston Villa expert issues ‘definite’ verdict on Douglas Luiz joining Arsenal this summer

Gabby Agbonlahor has insisted a potential Arsenal move for Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz will be “almost impossible” this summer.

The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted his old side don’t need to sell their stars and urged club chiefs to price the Gunners out of a move.

According to The Sun (20 July), Arsenal are eyeing a fresh move for Luiz, 25, amid competition from Tottenham for his signature.

The Gunners tried to sign the midfielder last summer but a move failed to materialise and he soon signed a fresh Villa deal – keeping him at the club until June 2026.

Luiz registered a best-ever return of seven goals and six assists across 40 appearances in all competitions last term despite competition from the likes of Boubacar Kamara, John McGinn and Jacob Ramsey.

The Brazil international joined Aston Villa from Man City for a reported £15million.

Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “This is one of those transfers that is almost impossible, to be honest.

“Aston Villa aren’t going to sell any of their best players. They don’t need to.

“If Villa didn’t sell him last summer when he had a year left on his contract, why would they do it now?

Arsenal

“He’s a big part of Emery’s project going forward and he was so good last season. There’s no way Emery would even entertain it.

“It’s a definite no – I think Arsenal and Spurs could find themselves priced out of any move for Luiz.”
