Aston Villa expert suggests Laporte deal may ‘collapse’ after source’s reveal

Aymeric Laporte’s ambition will be questioned if decides to join Aston Villa rather than a top-tier club.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton has claimed that a move to Villa Park from Manchester City should be considered as a step down for Laporte.

Football Insider exclusively revealed on Sunday (25 June) that Aston Villa are considering a move for Man City star Laporte.

Villa are in the market for another centre-back and Laporte ticks a lot of boxes for Unai Emery due to his Premier League experience and ability to play on the left-side of a partnership.

It would take a decent fee to bring the 29-year-old to Villa Park and Emery is hoping to persuade him to join but it is a difficult deal to get over the line and Laporte wants to play Champions League football next season.

Earlier this month (9 June), Football Insider revealed that City are planning to accept offers for the defender this summer as he is seen as surplus to requirements as long as Pep Guardiola brings in a top class replacement.

With a potential move to Aston Villa on the cards, Hutton has questioned Laporte’s ambition if a deal is to go through.

“A deal to Villa would fall down if he feels he isn’t being ambitious enough,” He told Football Insider.

“He’s played it the best team in the league for a number of years, although he hasn’t played week in week out, he’s still got that experience.”

“We’ll have to wait and see if it happens, but I’m sure there’ll be other teams that will be monitoring Laporte’s situation as well.

“He would be a great addition to Aston Villa next season.”
