Aston Villa fans rage at ‘crazy’ footage as controversy analysed from new angle

Aston Villa fans have labelled referee Marco Guida as “dreadful” after he ruled out Leon Bailey’s goal in the first half against Olympiakos on Thursday (2 May).

The Italian official adjudged Villa defender Clement Lenglet had committed an off-the-ball foul in the build-up before the Jamaican international found the back of the net.

It would have seen Unai Emery’s side take the lead in the Europa Conference League semi-final, with a quick VAR check backing up the on-field decision to rule out the goal.

The Greek side went ahead shortly after that incident through Ayoub El Kaabi, who went on to score a hat-trick for the visitors.

Ollie Watkins and Moussa Diaby both found the net for the Villans, but it wasn’t enough to claim a result for their side as they fell to a 4-2 defeat following Santiago Hezze’s fourth goal for Olympiakos.

It could have been very different if Bailey’s early goal had counted, with one Villa fan claiming it was a “poor” decision to give a foul against Lenglet.
