Kieran Maguire: Aston Villa have banked ‘significant deposit’ as £200m sponsor news emerges

Aston Villa have likely already banked a “significant deposit” from their sponsorship deal with Cazoo amid uncertainty regarding the company’s future.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Villa’s partnership with the used car retailers.

Villa are into the final year of their three-season front-of-shirt deal with Cazoo.

The Daily Mail reported on 27 August that the club are actively looking for a new primary sponsor ahead of next season.

It is understood that Cazoo are attempting to make over £200million of savings and that their sponsorship portfolio is now under review.

Maguire assessed how the firm’s deal with Villa is likely to be structured amid fears about their future.

“Most sponsors put down a significant deposit with respect to forthcoming commitments at the start of the season,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“The reason this is done is to help the club’s cash flow because there are no matches taking place in June or July but the club still has significant outgoings in terms of general overheads and wages.

“This will have been one of the issues that will have been taken into consideration when they signed the deal with Cazoo.

“However, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the whole amount has been paid for the season.

“I’m sure they will be monitoring the situation because I’m sure they’ll be aware of what’s happened with some other sponsors who have failed to last the course of the season.

“That has caused issues in the past with Huddersfield Town. There were also off incidents with regards to Nottingham Forest and QPR with Football Index.”
