Aston Villa land ‘£7.5m’ profit after done deal – Stefan Borson

Aston Villa have made up to £7.5million from a profit and sustainability (PSR) perspective on Jaden Philogene following his move to Ipswich Town.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider it’s a good deal for the West Midlands giants after selling the winger for the second time.

Villa initially sold Philogene to Hull City in September 2023 for around £5million.

Ipswich had an £18million offer accepted for the 22-year-old last summer, but Unai Emery’s side triggered a buy-back clause that matched their bid and ensured he returned to Villa Park.

They also had a 30 per cent sell-on clause on Philogene, meaning they only had to pay Hull £13.5million to secure his signature.

But after making just four starts in 15 appearances for Villa this season, he joined Ipswich in a £20million deal on 15 January.

Aston Villa wanted to take closer look at Jaden Philogene

Borson suggested Villa likely wanted to take a closer look at Philogene after re-signing him last summer.

He told Football Insider: “They have probably made about £5million from a PSR perspective by the time everything is done and dusted, maybe a little bit more at around £7.5million.

“It’s a good deal for them. You will see a lot of these situations where there is a buy-back clause.

“You have got two options with them, either you exercise the clause and then sell him on and take the profit if you don’t want the player or you do a deal with the selling club, whereby the selling club pays a fee to buy you out of that right.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery sat in the dugout

“In the case of Hull, maybe they could have said ‘We will give you £7.5million, but we are selling him to Ipswich for £20million rather than back to Villa’.

“It could have worked like that, but maybe Villa thought they would have a close look at him and see whether he could work there.”
