Aston Villa news: Agbonlahor demands extended ban as controversial Leon Bailey footage re-analysed

Lisandro Martinez should have been sent off during Man United’s 3-1 loss to Aston Villa in the Premier League at the weekend (6 November), according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Aston Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer claimed VAR should have intervened when Martinez “elbowed” Leon Bailey.

With just under half an hour to go, while the 24-year-old shielded the ball out of play for a Man United goal kick he threw his elbows into Bailey’s body.

The winger took to Twitter after the game to question why VAR did not review the incident.

A red card would have seen Martinez banned for Man United’s next three domestic games and he would be unavailable until the trip to Wolves on New Year’s Day.

“The reason he did it was because it was like a snail chasing a rapid, rapid motorbike,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“When Bailey scored his goal, maybe he was frustrated with how slow he was to get to him and thought ‘I’ve got my eye on you for the rest of the game and you are getting a few elbows’.

“VAR should look at that and it should be a sending off for Martinez. He does it quite a lot.

“I don’t mind his physical game but there’s no need to throw elbows, you can use your shoulder. If he does that with his shoulder then fair enough but you can’t use your elbows.

“I feel he was frustrated with Martinez because his team was bullied, outworked and outclassed by Aston Villa.”
