Aston Villa news: Agbonlahor hails ‘perfect’ Callum Chambers as ‘very clever’ details emerge

Callum Chambers is the “perfect” signing for Steven Gerrard and Aston Villa, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Aston Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer hailed the “very clever” deal to bring Chambers to Villa Park.

The Midlands giants made the surprise announcement on Thursday (27 January) that the versatile defender had signed from Arsenal.

The Telegraph reported the same day they had paid no transfer fee for Chambers as he was out of contract at Arsenal at the end of the season.

The Gunners had no plans to offer the 27-year-old a new deal and he had made just two Premier League starts this season.

“The good thing about Callum Chambers is he’s back up for right-back and back up for centre-back,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“He’ll be fourth-choice centre-half behind Kortney Hause but he’ll be second-choice right-back.

“For Steven Gerrard it’s perfect. He’s not going to kick up a fuss if he’s not playing. He knows he’s not going to be starting if everyone’s fit.

“I think it makes sense for Aston Villa. When you need a fourth-choice centre-half and a second-choice right-back you can’t be spending a lot of money.

“It’s a very clever bit of business from Aston Villa. We needed a bit of cover in that area.”

Chambers played 122 times across all competitions in seven-and-a-half years at Arsenal.

The three-cap England international has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal with Villa.
