Aston Villa news: Pundit ‘fears’ for Matty Cash after twist – ‘it’s horrible to say’
Frank McAvennie has claimed Aston Villa defender Matty Cash would only move to Chelsea for the money.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker said Cash will need to be certain he has the potential to replace Reece James in the starting lineup if he wants to move.
According to journalist Simon Phillips (9 January), the Blues are considering a deal for the 25-year-old this month to provide cover for James.
The 23-year-old suffered an injury in the game against Bournemouth at the end of December, reaggravating the problem that kept him out of the World Cup.
As quoted by football.london (14 January), Graham Potter confirmed the right-back returned to training alone this week and is expected to return to the side next month.
McAvennie insisted Cash would simply be a back up player for Potter’s side.
“I think he would be a first-team squad player,” he told Football Insider.
“But there is that many games now that I think he will get game time. If James is fit he is number one, he is getting in before you.
“So you then have to think about your own ability, do you think you can become number one ahead of James? If you do not, why would you go? Because of the money, because of the prestige of playing for Chelsea.

“You will get game time but not enough. I just fear footballers do not think about that now and they just want money.
“That is a horrible thing to say but I think that is the way football is going now, it is all about money.“
