Aston Villa news: Steven Gerrard a ‘caged animal’ after controversial footage emerges – Agbonlahor
Steven Gerrard is like a “caged animal” when dealing with media as Aston Villa manager, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Aston Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer delivered his verdict after Gerrard’s spiky interview with BT Sport’s Des Kelly following his side’s 1-0 loss to Arsenal on Saturday (19 March).
The 41-year-old hit back after Kelly pointed out Villa only had a shot on target at the end of the game and there was a gap between Villa and Liverpool, Man City, Chelsea and Arsenal.
Gerrard insisted his side had to “grab” one of the top-six places and thought Kelly’s questioning would be “better”.
“I thought he was very honest and he’s always going to be very honest,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.
“When his team don’t play well, he’ll say it. He was spot on with what he was saying, some of the players were not on board with the tactics. You could see that they didn’t believe in what he told them to do.
“Sometimes when people do ask certain questions about having zero shots it can be annoying for a manager.
“That was nothing compared to what Steven Gerrard can be like. He’s a caged animal in there. From the Steven Gerrard I played against and trained with at England, Des Kelly’s seen nothing yet. I’m sure he’s holding a lot back.”

Gerrard has overseen eight wins from 19 Premier League games since he took over at Villa Park last November (2021).
They are up to ninth in the table, 12 points off the European places.
