Aston Villa players told 'get over it' as Gerrard tipped to make training ground ban - Phillips

Kevin Phillips expects new Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard to ban any mention of Jack Grealish around the training ground.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Claret and Blue claimed the squad “need to get over” the 26-year-old’s departure.

Aston Villa announced the arrival of Gerrard on a three-and-a-half year contract on Thursday.

The ex-Liverpool captain will be tasked with inspiring a turnaround at Villa Park.

The Midlands club are languishing 16th in the table after losing five consecutive Premier League fixtures.

Phillips suggested the downturn in form is in part due to a “hangover” from Grealish’s £100million move to Manchester City in the summer.

“The squad is very good,” he told Football Insider. “It is just about getting the best out of them now.

“Everyone has to get over the hangover of Jack Grealish going. I wouldn’t be surprised it Steven comes in and says, ‘I don’t want any mention of Grealish around the training ground now. He was brilliant for the club but he has gone.’ They need to get over it and get on with it.

“Steven will come in with fresh ideas and this is now about the next chapter for Aston Villa. That is the way forward.”

Football Insider revealed on November 12th that chief executive Christian Purslow promised Gerrard “huge” funds will be made available in January and next summer.

Gerrard’s first game in charge sees Brighton travel to Villa Park on Saturday.
