Aston Villa set to sign ‘big-name’ striker after confirmed news – pundit

Aston Villa are primed to sign a “big-name” striker following the departure of Danny Ings.

That’s according to former Hibernian striker Tam McManus, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Villa’s transfer plans.

West Ham confirmed the signing of Ings on Friday (20 January).

McManus expects a replacement to arrive shortly.

“I think Villa must have someone coming in if Ings is going,” McManus told Football Insider‘s Ben Wild.

“You have Ollie Watkins in there and he’s not exactly set the world on fire. He’s a decent option but he isn’t going to get you 15 goals in a season.

“Ings guarantees goals but maybe he doesn’t fit in with the way Emery wants to play, it could be that simple. I still don’t think you let him go unless you have someone lined up.

“It’s Emery and it’ll probably be a big-name signing considering some of the connections he has. If Villa can get this guy in, a younger player who can develop but is also ready to play in the Premier League, that would be ideal.

“You don’t want to be left with just one striker for the rest of the season. Villa do have wide men who could play as strikers but that’s just not the same.”

Ings made 18 total appearances for Aston Villa this season though only eight of those have been starts.

He has scored six goals in those outings.
