Medical insider: Matty Cash ‘vulnerable’ as Aston Villa return date revealed

Matty Cash’s playing style means he is particularly “vulnerable” to hamstring injuries – but Aston Villa likely expect him to recover from his latest setback at some point in October.

That is the view of medical expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in injury and data analysis.

Cash, 25, was forced off after less than half an hour in Villa’s 1-1 draw with Man City earlier this month (3 September).

It has since emerged that the Poland international has suffered a hamstring setback.

The right-back tweeted on Monday (12 September) that he will not feature for the national team in their upcoming Nations League double-header against the Netherlands and Wales.

Dinnery assessed Cash’s setback and estimated how long he might be sidelined.

“There isn’t a great deal to go off in terms of mechanism of injury on this one,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“There has been nothing from the club in terms of an update.

“You would hope that we are looking at two to four weeks. But the difficulty with Matty Cash is his style of play. He is up and down the pitch, box to box as much as he can.

“He is travelling large distances at high intensity with very little recovery time. That in itself makes those hamstrings particularly vulnerable when he’s fatigued.

“You don’t need to rush him back because there is a massive risk with regards to that.

“If he is absent from the national team, we are probably looking at grade one, maybe borderline grade two. You would expect a return in October, but there is nothing definitive at this stage.”
