Medical expert: Lucas Digne’s season may be over as Aston Villa worst fears revealed

Aston Villa star Lucas Digne’s season may be over if suspicions that he has fractured his clavicle are confirmed.

That is the view of injury expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in medicine and data analysis.

Digne, 28, was forced off with 10 minutes remaining in Villa’s 4-0 defeat to Tottenham last Saturday (9 April).

The French left-back, who signed from Everton for £25million in January, used his shirt as a makeshift sling as he left the pitch.

As quoted by Birmingham Live last Sunday (10 April), Villa boss Steven Gerrard revealed: “If it’s what we fear, it could be season over.”

Dinnery mirrored the manager’s assessment.

“If this is confirmed as a fractured clavicle, you wouldn’t expect a return this season,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“Gerrard’s comments were based on an initial assessment from the medical team.

“Outwardly, they will want to be cautiously optimistic. But internally, there will be a strong understanding of the potential impact.

“Digne has had a bit of bad run in the team. It’s his third consecutive withdrawal.

“Unfortunately, I’d be surprised if Digne is back this season. Imaging will confirm the extent of the problem.

“That puts Villa in a bit of a sticky situation for the run-in. They are going to be heavily reliant on Ashley Young.”

Digne has supplied one assist in 10 appearances since his mid-season switch to Villa.

His side are without a win in four games and are next in action against Leicester City next Saturday (23 April).
