Aston Villa one of three Championship clubs keeping close tabs on Wolves ace – report
By Danny Wright
Aston Villa are one of three clubs keeping close tabs on Wolves captain Danny Batth, according to a report.
The Daily Mail claims that Hull and Sheffield Wednesday are also keen on the 26-year-old centre-back, who could find himself shifted down the pecking order at Molineux next season.
It is understood that Villa and their Championship rivals are monitoring whether Batth features in Nuno Espirito Santo’s plans, as the recently-appointed Molineux manager has bolstered his centre-back options with the signings of Willy Boly and Roderick Miranda this summer.
Aston Villa could also be on the look-out for a new defender to replace Nathan Baker, who has recently re-joined Bristol City on a permanent deal.
Steve Bruce has already bolstered his defensive options with the recruitment of John Terry and Chris Samba on free transfers.
However a move for Batth would be bringing in someone who has been performing at a high level of consistency in the Championship for the past few seasons.
The senior Wolves ace featured 41 times across all competitions last term, scoring four goals in the process as his side managed to avoid relegation from the second-tier.
Batth is a product of the West Midlands club’s academy and has earned a total of 191 appearances for the club in his time there.
Football Insider Verdict
Batth would be a brilliant signing for Aston Villa and could be a defender that instantly steps into their first-team plans. Bruce could look to utilise a similar back-three formation that saw him help Hull achieve promotion a few years back, so Batth would fit in well alongside Terry and perhaps James Chester. The Wolves stopper is someone who knows the region well and his leadership skills is definitely something that could improve Bruce’s squad. Villa might have a bit of funds to play with now that Baker has left and with a Ross McCormack departure also on the cards, it seems like Bruce is happy with his attack and is looking to sort out his rearguard.
