Aston Villa tipped to solve ‘major problem’ in transfer market after ‘worrying’ analysis – pundit

Paul Robinson has tipped Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard to solve his side’s defensive problems in the transfer market.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Tottenham and England number one claimed Villa’s susceptibility to counter attacks is “worrying.”

Steven Gerrard’s side slipped to their fifth defeat in eight after a 1-0 home defeat to Watford.

As per analysis from PGR Analytics (19 February), Roy Hodgson’s side enjoyed a lot of success on the counter attack at Villa Park.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the loss (19 February), Gerrard said he was “really frustrated and disappointed” with his team’s performance.

Robinson suggested Brighton’s Yves Bissouma would solve Villa’s problems.

“Defensively, that will be the next area he will look at to strengthen the team,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“There has been a lot of talk about Bissouma from Brighton and he is someone who could shield your back four and give you great quality in the midfield.

“Steven knows he needs to sharpen up defensively in the summer.

“It’s worrying how susceptible they were to the counter attack against Watford. They look too open when possession is turned over. It’s a major problem.

“They need to reinforce and strengthen in the summer if they want to challenge the top six.”

The Claret and Blues are 12th in the Premier League table.

Next up is a trip to Brighton on Saturday.
