Aston Villa tipped to use special relationship to lure ‘sensational footballer’ Gomez in January – Whelan

Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard could “use his contacts” at Liverpool to secure a loan deal for Joe Gomez in January, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 24-year-old is a “very good player”.

The Mirror claim (29 November) new Villa manager Gerrard is targeting a temporary move for Gomez ahead of the January window.

Football Insider exclusively revealed last week (November 26th) that the recently-appointed manager is looking to strengthen the spine of the team by bringing in a centre-back and central midfielder in the winter window.

Whelan insisted Gerrard will make use of his “added pulling power” at his former club in order to sign Gomez.

“He’s a very good player,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“Gerrard obviously has that added pulling power at Liverpool, which could enable him to get some of these loan players in.

“I’m sure him and Jurgen Klopp have got a really good relationship, as he will with the whole club.

“It doesn’t surprise me that his first port of call is his old club, because he knows what he’s going to get, and the players will respect him and know everything about him.

“It’s no different to what a lot of managers do. Gerrard will use his contacts, use his pull as a legend of the game.

“If Gomez comes in, he will be a quality addition to that Villa defence.”

Aston Villa

Aston Villa have won their first two Premier League matches under the stewardship of Gerrard.

11-cap England international Gomez, who has been described as a “sensational footballer” by Klopp, has played just 316 minutes of football so far this term.
