Aston Villa to back Unai Emery with ‘hundreds of millions’ after source’s reveal – pundit

Aston Villa will heavily back Unai Emery in January if the club are still in a relegation battle.

That’s according to former Hibernian striker Tam McManus, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Villa’s January plans.

On Monday (24 October), Aston Villa confirmed the appointment of Emery from Villarreal.

Sources told Football Insider on 27 October that Villa’s owners are ready to hand their new manager a “huge” transfer kitty ahead of the January window.

The latest from our Villa source is that further talks have taken place among the club’s recruitment team and Emery about potential targets.

With Villa sitting one point above the relegation zone after their 4-0 loss to Newcastle on Saturday (29 October), McManus is certain Villa will spend in January.

“We know Villa have the money, they have been spending it for years now,” McManus told Football Insider‘s Ben Wild.

“So I don’t think it will change in January, especially if they are still near the bottom three when it comes around.

“Gerrard brought his own players in during the summer but none of them have really had an impact. So the new manager will want to get his own guys in, that’s natural when any new manager comes in.

“But I think it’s as important to get the players who aren’t good enough out of the club. So I think there will be a lot of comings and goings in January.

“It’s exciting for the fans but they are probably used to it after the hundreds of millions they have spent in the last few years. They’ll continue to do it.”

Emery was not allowed to manage Villa in their loss to Newcastle due to work permit rules.

He will be in the dugout when his new side faces Manchester United on Sunday (6 November).
