Aston Villa ‘to sell players in June’ – Stefan Borson reacts to five done deals

Aston Villa were one of the Premier League’s busiest sides in the January transfer window after making five new signings.

The West Midlands giants secured loan deals for Marcus Rashford, Marco Asensio and Axel Disasi before the window slammed shut, while Donyell Malen and Andres Garcia joined on a permanent basis.

Unai Emery’s side were believed to be close to the profit and sustainability (PSR) limit for 2023-24, with top-flight clubs only permitted to lose £105million over a rolling three-year period.

Finance expert Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Villa will be close to the spending limit again this season after their January business.

Deloitte’s 2025 Money League showed their revenue reached a new club-record figure of £265million last season, while their wage bill soared to £252million.

Borson previously told Football Insider Villa’s wage bill will increase to £290million this season despite their PSR concerns.

In terms of outgoings last month, Jhon Duran completed his initial £64million move to Al-Nassr, while Jaden Philogene joined Ipswich Town for £20million and Diego Carlos headed to Fenerbahce in a £10million deal.

Aston Villa could sell star player in June to avoid PSR blow

Borson expects Villa to sell a player in June to avoid a spending breach.

He told Football Insider: “It’s very hard to see how their revenue is going to be any more than £350million.

“I think £350million is quite a generous assumption, even with a good European run generating £60-65million. When I look at the numbers, it’s very hard to see how they have got more than £350million.

“They have got lots of player amortisation and, on top of that, they paid probably £15million of loan fees on top of the wages in the recent window.

“It does look to me as though they are very tight on PSR for this season, and their plan will be to do something similar to what they did last season in terms of selling players in June. They will probably try and find one of their young players to trade on.

“This is all after the sale of Duran, Champions League prize money, the new Adidas deal and Betano. All of that is in the assumption.

“They may well be fine, but I do think they will be doing business in June.”

Aston Villa could land £70m windfall after Champions League success

Football Insider revealed on 5 February Villa have added more than £11million to their wage bill following their late deals for Rashford, Asensio and Disasi.

Rashford and Asensio both made their debuts in the 2-1 victory over Tottenham in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Sunday (9 February).

Emery’s side currently sit eighth in the Premier League table and are into the last 16 of the Champions League following their strong performances in Europe.

Borson previously told Football Insider Villa are set to generate around £70million in prize money this season.
