Aston Villa told to complete Luis Suarez deal after confirmed news – pundit

Luis Suarez would be a “wonderful” signing for Aston Villa though he may opt for a move to South America.

That’s according to former Villains hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Suarez’s chances of returning to the Premier League.

The Athletic reported on 1 June that Aston Villa were considering the 35-year-old who has been in regular contact with former Liverpool teammate Steven Gerrard.

He is available on a free transfer with his contract after leaving Atletico Madrid after two seasons with the La Liga giants

However, in quotes carried by Spanish newspaper SPORT (8 June), River Plate president Jorge Brito confirmed that River officials have met with Suarez in a bid to lure him to Argentina.

“Can he still do it? That’s the question,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“It’s a different league and he would need to keep his behaviour in check.

“It would be good for the boys who are there, to train with him and have him around.

“For Watkins and Ings, having him around would be wonderful. It’s paying his wages, isn’t it?

“He’s at that age where you could probably get him on a reduced wage because he won’t play every game.

“VIlla will still be able to give him a good wage. He won’t get that anywhere else so it’s whether he wants to come back and grind in the Premier League again.

“At his age, maybe he would prefer to go to South America or the MLS.”

After being a key part of the Atletico Madrid side that won the 2020-21 La Liga title, Suarez fell out of favour in his final months with the club.

The Uruguay international still scored 13 times and provided three assists in 45 games across all competitions last season.

In other news, Aston Villa are in advanced talks to sign a player after a record offer.
