Aston Villa told to hijack Newcastle move for James Tarkowski as ‘discussions’ underway – pundit

Danny Mills has claimed Burnley ace James Tarkowski could be a big help for Aston Villa as they vie for a top-six finish in the coming seasons.

The former England defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 29-year-old would be a “good fit” at Villa Park.

As per Telegraph journalist John Percy on Twitter (18 May), Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard wants to sign a new centre-back this summer and Tarkowski has been “discussed” as a potential target.

According to the Daily Mirror (13 May), West Ham are set to end their interest in Tarkowski as they “expect” him to join mega-rich Newcastle this summer.

The England international is set to walk away from Burnley for free this summer upon the expiration of his contract.

Mills suggested “four or five” clubs will be sniffing around the former Brentford man during the off-season.

“I think he’d be a good fit at Villa,” he told Football Insider‘s Connor Whitley.

“He’s been in and around the England squad, and he’s quality.

“Don’t get me wrong, he’s not ready to make a jump up into a top-six club.. But he could well help Villa head that way.

“He’s a good, solid player who could really flourish if he’s put into a better team.

“If he’s available on a free then four or five teams will be in for him. He’s in a really decent position.”

Tarkowski has played all but three matches for Burnley this term as they battle to avoid relegation from the Premier League.
