Aston Villa transfer news: Billy Gilmour cited in ‘great’ new signing claim – Hutton

Alan Hutton has suggested the lure of reuniting with Steven Gerrard could see Aston Villa win the race to sign Rangers starlet Rory Wilson.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gers and Villa defender claimed the 16-year-old will take “great” confidence knowing the ex-Ibrox boss wants to sign him.

Football Insider revealed on Monday (28 March) that Rangers have offered Rory Wilson the most lucrative first-year professional deal in the club’s history amid interest from England.

However, a club source has told this site the teenage striker wants to leave this summer.

The Scottish Sun (28 March) claim Villa are set to beat both Manchester clubs and Liverpool to his signing.

Hutton suggested Wilson would want to emulate the likes of Billy Gilmour in making the move south.

Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “You’re talking about the likes of Villa being in for him. Gerrard will know him very well.

“There’s an opportunity there for him right away to go down and be in the big league, if you want. To thrive there and learn your trade down south.

“Gerrard will know all about him and for a young player, confidence is everything.

“To know that the previous manager held you in such high regard, he’s looking at you know, wants to take you to a developing squad who are trying to get into European places themselves, that is a great thing for a youngster.

“You look across at Celtic, Ben Doak to Liverpool, Billy Gilmour at Rangers. All these boys have gone down and done well so they go off the back of that.”
